Testing For Formaldehyde Is Recommended
The strong odor emitted by Formaldehyde is the way we are generally alerted to its presence in the atmosphere.
Formaldehyde is found in many building products and common household products. Exposure to products that contain formaldehyde can be a risk to your health, making testing for it a good idea.
Mold Testing NJ-NY is a certified Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Testing Service. In the process of IAQ testing we routinely include testing for the presence of formaldehyde. When dangerous levels of impurities, including formaldehyde are found, we usually recommend remediation.
How Is A Person Exposed to Formaldehyde?
Formaldehyde may be present anywhere. It breaks down quickly and doesn’t accumulate in the one’s system, but it is toxic. Extended periods of exposure can cause serious illness. Formaldehyde is found in treated wood products used in construction. It is also found in paint, varnish and floor finishing products. It can be in cigarette smoke. Permanent press finish clothing and some cosmetics also contain formaldehyde. In some countries formaldehyde is used as a food preservative, but we do not use it for that purpose in the United States.
How Does Formaldehyde Exposure Affect Humans?
Prolonged exposure to formaldehyde can, in rare cases, result in cancer or other serious health problems. It can cause eye and nasal irritation, headaches, burning in the throat, and it can result in the symptoms of asthma. It is also thought to cause changes to the nervous system. The irritation resulting from exposure to formaldehyde is usually temporary and reversible. Some air purifiers have filters that will inhibit the concentration of formaldehyde. Good air circulation and ventilation are important for lowering exposure to impurities including formaldehyde. Labels on products that will come in direct contact with skin or eyes will usually note the presence of formaldehyde.
