West Milford is a township in Passaic County NJ. According to a 2018 census it has a population of approximately 26,392 people. West Milford was originally New Milford in western Bergen County in the 18th century. There was also a town named New Milford established in eastern Bergen County, so when they both applied for a post office in 1828, a Washington DC clerk decided to name this one in the western part of the county West Milford. Parts of Bergen County and Essex County became Passaic County and West Milford was the western end of the newly formed county. West Milford became a municipality in 1834 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. West Milford borders the Passaic County towns of Bloomingdale and Ringwood.
