Irvington is a township located in Essex County NJ. According to a 2020 census it has a population of approximately 61,176 people. The area in what later became Irvington was known as “Camptown” in the mid 19th century. The citizens of “Camptown”, not wanting people to think the lyrics of the song were about their town decided to change its name to Irvington, in honor of Washington Irving. In 1898 Irvington was incorporated as a town, replacing Irvington Village. In 1982 Irvington was one of 4 towns in Essex County that passed a referendum to become a township in order to take advantage of revenue sharing policies of the federal government. Irvington is bordered by the Essex County municipalities of Maplewood and Newark.
