Berkeley Heights is a township in Union County, New Jersey. As of the 2020 census it has a population of approximately 13,285 inhabitants. It was originally incorporated as “New Providence Township” in 1809 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. This occurred while it was still part of Essex County. New Providence Township became part of the newly formed Union County in 1857. In 1951 the township changed its name to Berkeley Heights as the result of a referendum. This name derives from John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton, one of the founders of the “Province of New Jersey”. Berkeley Heights is bordered by the Union County municipalities of New Providence, Mountainside, Summit and Scotch Plains.
