Can Mold Be Prevented After a Flood?

Mahwah NJ Mold TestingThere are measures that can be undertaken to prevent mold from forming and growing after you have had flooding in your house. First step is to find the source of the flooding. Basements are the areas most often flooded after heavy rainfall or major storms. If you use a sump pump, now’s the time for it to get to work. A sump pump should be inspected periodically to make certain it is working when you need it.  With quick action, mold prevention after a flood is possible.

Once the rain has stopped and you can safely walk in the affected area, it is time to begin the drying out process. Open windows and doors when possible. Remove items that have become wet, or even just damp. A small amount of dampness can be a breeding ground for mold. Employ fans, floor dryers, and dehumidifiers. This circulating air is helpful, but doesn’t necessarily reach all areas that were underwater. Sometimes cracks in your foundation, and in sheetrock may still have moisture.

Next Step Is Mold Testing

Mold testing is the important next step following a household flood. Even after you feel you have completely dried the area moisture can still seep in. This is where mold loves to grow. Within as little as 1 day you can have mold forming. Approximately 48 hours after a flood, it is necessary to have the area inspected for mold. Mold Testing NJ-NY will test for mold and if it is found, a full report and remediation recommendations will be provided. We do not do remediation work, we only inspect for mold.  Testing assures you that you can have mold prevention after a flood.
